New EES border controls in Hungary: What our customers need to know
In the autumn of 2025, the procedure for crossing the EU's external borders will change. The European Union is launching the automated Entry/Exit System (EES), designed to enhance the security of the Schengen area. Hungary will be one of the first to implement EES at its land border crossings with Ukraine and Serbia, followed by airports.
Who needs to pay attention to these changes?
The EES will affect exclusively citizens of non-EU countries who travel to the Schengen area visa-free or on a Schengen visa for short stays (up to 90 days within any 180-day period). This directly concerns citizens of Russia, Belarus, and other third countries.
What to expect at the border?
The new system means more thorough collection of biometric data each time you cross the border. Officers will register:
Your passport data
The date and place of border crossing
Your biometric photograph
Prints of four fingers
